Road Regulations in Cube Land
By GMikeG | October 8, 2007
I feel your pain Dude! We’ve all been there. The laws of common civilized behavior seem to erode in the Cube Jungle we know and love. However, is it a open and shut case of inconsiderate slobs simply trying to get from point a to point b in the shortest most direct route? Or is it more of a cultural issue in this melting pot of outsourced services we call work?
Having been trained in root cause analysis (caution: dangerous use of office-speak) I decided to research this phenomenon. As I’ve stated recently, I am the Diversity Ombudsmen for my company. I’ve noticed that many of our software engineers come from India. Knowing that Indians are highly intelligent and sensitive people I realize they would not intentionally walk in your space, man.
I went to the source, in this case the following website to understand how this came to be:

Road Regulations in India
The Rules Of The Road Regulations was brought into effect from July 1, 1989.
Keep Left
The driver of a motor vehicle shall drive the vehicle as close to the left side of the road as may be expedient and shall allow all traffic which is proceeding in the opposite direction to pass on his left hand side.
The above regulation is completely confusing and ambiguous. If you are driving as close to the left as may be expedient, how can you have someone in the opposite direction pass on his left hand side? This, Dude, is a recipe for cultural collision.
You’ve got to be on your guard in cube land. The next time you approach an intersection, stop and listen. If you hear someone muttering “No one in this country can ever pronounce my name right. It’s not that hard: Samir Na-gheen-an-a-jar. Nagheenanajar” brace for impact. Because Dude, no telling if he’s going to be passing you on the left or the right or driving it home straight up the middle.
